Shower enclosure glass and hardware repair
UAE bathrooms run hot water against cool air-conditioning, then dry under aggressive air. That cycle attacks silicone, rollers, hinges and the holes drilled in tempered screens. This page is about enclosure glass and hardware — not windows and not shopfronts. It covers the failure signs that actually matter in villas and apartments, when a panel can be reused, and when a new tempered lite with fresh hole positions is the safer repair.
How shower glass typically fails here
The usual UAE pattern is not a mysterious mid-panel crack. It is a hinge that has been over-tightened onto a glass hole, a pivot that has rusted in a hard-water tray, or a sliding door whose bottom guide filled with sand and then jumped the rail. Frameless screens also fail at the wall channel when the original silicone was asked to act as structure. Once the panel rocks, the hole elongates and the next slam of a door can dice the lite. Spots that look like lime are often on the glass; they are not cracks. True cracks on tempered shower glass are rare before explosive failure, which is why a screen that ‘only chips at the corner’ still needs a full panel, not a resin fill that belongs on a car windscreen.
Repair the hardware or replace the pane
If the glass is intact and the door only scrapes, we look at hinges, seals, and whether the tray has moved. A villa that settled can throw a frameless door out of plumb even though the glass is still good. Replacing gaskets and resetting pivot compression is then the repair. If a hole is starred, if a chip sits in the tempered edge, or if someone has already drilled a new handle hole with a masonry bit, the pane is finished. Tempered glass cannot be recut. Semi-frameless units sometimes allow a new sliding panel while the fixed return stays, provided the rail is not twisted. We will not silicon a rocking screen ‘for now’ in a family bathroom; that is how fingers later meet a collapsing door.
What we check on a survey
Thickness is usually 8 mm or 10 mm for doors, sometimes 6 mm on cheap framed kits. We measure the opening at three heights because tiled niches are seldom square. We note whether the panel is clear, ultra-clear, or tinted, and whether there is a treatment that pretends to be easy-clean. Hole centres for hinges and handles are recorded from the glass, not from a brochure, because local fabricators vary. Water bars, trays, and whether the enclosure is against a window that we must not silicone shut are all part of the scope. If the bathroom is on a high floor, we plan how a 10 mm pane will enter the lift without chipping the polished edge.
Materials and glass types for wet rooms
Shower doors that people push against should be tempered, with polished edges and holes that were drilled before the furnace. Laminated shower glass exists for specific hotel specifications; it behaves differently at the edge and is not a casual swap. Plastic substitutes fog and scratch in hard water and are not what we specify for a primary family shower. Hardware should be stainless grades that tolerate chlorine cleaners; painted zinc hinges that turned orange in a year are a hardware problem, not a glass mystery. Neutral-cure silicone belongs at the wall channel; acetic ‘bathroom smell’ silicones can stain natural stone trays still common in older Sharjah and Ajman villas.
Process on replacement day
The water is isolated. Old silicone is cut, not chiselled into the glaze of the tile. The failed panel is walked out with pads so the remaining return does not take a hit. We dry-fit the new lite, confirm swing or slide, then bed the channel. Hinges are torqued in a cross pattern so one bolt does not become a stress raiser. Seals are trimmed to the tray, not stretched. A short cure window follows; using the shower immediately can wash out the wet joint. We leave the opening usable with a temporary curtain only if you insist and only if the wet wall is not a live electrical zone.
Safety around wet tempered glass
Never attempt to ‘ease’ a tight frameless door by hammering the hinge. Never drill a robe hook into a tempered panel. If a screen has a bitten edge from a dropped bottle, treat the panel as spent. Children should not hang on sliding soap baskets bolted through glass. After a dice-out, crumbs in the trap can cut; we recommend a careful vacuum before the plumber is blamed for a slow drain. We do not stand on trays that flex; a moving acrylic tray is a plumbing and base issue that will keep breaking doors if ignored.
How long shower work usually takes
A hinge and seal service on an intact door can be a short visit. A new rectangular door with two holes follows the tempering queue and is often a planned second appointment. Shaped panels that follow a circular tray, or cut-outs around a window transom, take longer because the pattern must be templated. We do not give a fantasy ‘two-hour custom shape’ for furnace glass. If only the handle moved, the visit is shorter than a full panel, and we will say so.
Questions people ask
Can you polish out a chip in shower glass?
Edge chips on tempered shower doors are not a polish job. The pane has a stress profile; grinding it at home is how people trigger a full dice-out.
My door leaks at the tray. Is that the glass?
Often it is a missing sweep, a tray that sits low, or silicone that never bonded to a dusty tile. We check those before ordering a new lite.
Do you repair framed sliding kits from hardware stores?
Sometimes the rollers and the panel can be matched. If the alloy frame is twisted, a frameless or semi-frameless replacement is the more honest conversation.
Is 6 mm glass acceptable for a door?
Many kit doors use 6 mm. We will say when a 8 or 10 mm tempered door is the better specification for a wide opening that people lean on.
Can you match ultra-clear low-iron glass?
Yes if that is what is already there. Mixing green-edged float with a low-iron return looks obvious in daylight and we will flag it.
Will you silicone over mould instead of replacing a panel?
Mould in a joint is a cleaning and ventilation issue. We recut the joint. We do not trap mould under a new smear and call it a repair.
Do you move plumbing or only glass?
We stay with glass and enclosure hardware. Mixer valves and waste traps belong to a plumber if the tray itself is the reason doors keep failing.
Are prices listed for standard shower doors?
No list prices. Openings, hole positions and access change the scope. A later figure would be an indicative range for that bathroom.
